How can I understand which DX9 features my motherboard chipset and Graphics card will support?

There is a utility called DirectX Caps Viewer (DXCapsViewer.exe) in Bin\DXUtils of your DXSDK folder that shows information about the capabilities of your motherboard chipset and cards.

This information includes DirectDraw capabilities and Direct3D devices, DirectMusic capabilities (for DirectMusic ports), DirectInput devices and their capabilities, DirectPlay connections (server provider information), DirectSound capture devices and capabilities.

Developers should use this tool to verify the capabilities of their development and test computers, making sure that their DirectX applications correctly test the current computer capabilities and react accordingly. Also if the required features are not available it is suggested that applications are to be designed with fallback strategies.
