What are the advantages of a programmable pipeline?

Microsoft introduced a partially programmable pipeline with the DirectX 8.0 release [Sep 30, 2000]. It has advanced a lot since then and with DirectX 10 the fixed function pipeline is history. Although for a beginner this seems frustrating, since the learning curve is high, as he advances the flexibility and raw power provided by this model will become incomparable to him. Programmers can directly express algorithms and equations learned from textbooks and artists can easily modify the exposed parameters to make surrealistic scenes.
