What are the advantages of a programmable pipeline?
Microsoft introduced a partially programmable pipeline with the DirectX 8.0 release [Sep 30, 2000]. It has advanced a lot since then and with DirectX 10 the fixed function pipeline is history. Although for a beginner this seems frustrating, since the learning curve is high, as he advances the flexibility and raw power provided by this model will become incomparable to him.
