DirectX 10 is using a new driver model [WDDM]. How is backward compatibility ensured?

As DirectX up to version 10 was based on Component Object Model [COM] architecture, every version of it must support previous versions. However DirectX 10 is deeply embedded into the Windows Vista operating system. To maintain backward compatibility Microsoft provides two versions of DirectX with Windows Vista.

  • DirectX 9.0L [Longhorn] – provides backward compatibility by supporting DirectX 9 hardware. Microsoft additionally intended that this bridge version helps Original Equipment Manufacturers [OEM] to adapt to the high end graphics requirements of Vista. It was built on top of Windows Graphics Foundation [WGF] 1.0
  • DirectX 10 – Built on top of WGF 2.0 and Shader Model 4.0 it will take advantage of the DirectX 10 capable hardware
