How are performance gains assured for DirectX 10?

  • Unlike previous versions, DirectX 10 is not an extension of its predecessor. It foregoes the old DirectX practice of using "capability bits" to indicate which features are active on the current hardware. DirectX 10 was totally redesigned and defines a minimum standard of hardware capabilities which must be supported for a display system to be "DirectX 10 compatible".
  • It uses the WDDM model with the addition of a scheduler and memory virtualization system.
  • It was built on WGF 2.0 and SM 4.0, with such high-end requirements as geometric shading and further off-loading of graphical activities from the CPU [Central Processor Unit] to the GPU [Graphics Processor Unit].
  • This new graphics API promises to improve graphics/gaming performance by 8 fold (at least in terms of rendering queue efficiency).
