What are the significant improvements from a game developer perspective?

DirectX 10 is not an extension of DirectX9, but a totally re-coded DirectX to take maximum advantage of the underlying WDDM model. It opens the door to previously unattainable real-time graphics techniques.

  • GPU-accelerated morph targets – can be used to create realistic facial animation/expressions by combining multiple morph targets on top of a base mesh.
  • AI (Neural networks), Physics, Particle systems can be run completely on the GPU.
  • Data Parallelism- Optimum usage of GPU coupled with CPU can improve the overall performance of the system.
  • DX10 Cloning Factory – Complex scenes can be drawn with minimum number of draw calls by instancing.
  • Better shadows
  • Improved performance through render target array (single pass cube map rendering)
  • Advanced vertex and geometry shading allows programmers to create objects that deform when they are dropped, kicked, or fired upon
