What is a Servlet?
A Java application that, different from applets, runs on the server and generates HTML-pages that are sent to the client. Servlet technology was developed to replace the less efficient CGI technology. The Servlet class is not in the Core API for the JDK.It can be thought of as an applet that runs on a server. The biggest difference between the two is that a Java applet is persistent. This means that once it is started, it stays in memory and can fulfill multiple requests. The persistence of Java applets makes them faster because there's no wasted time in setting up and tearing down the process.
Servlets can run on browsers that are not Java-enabled. Servlets are designed to support a request/response computing model that is commonly used in web servers. In a request/response model, a client sends a request message to a server and the server responds by sending back a reply message.
