Can I store XML documents in a SQL server BLOB field?

Yes you can - here is an example:

CREATE procedure insertXML (@x ntext) as
insert into Table(xml) values (@x)

You can write a small ADO program that reads data from the file and passes it to the stored procedure.

In SQL 2005 you can use the XML datatype and, if the files are accessible to the database server, you can use OpenRowset BULK to load the files from inside T-SQL.
