Java Games tutorial #3

At long last, here is tutorial #3!

We're sorry we've made you wait so long for this installment. In fact, we're so broken up about it that we're changing our publishing schedule. Instead of cranking out a "great big" tutorial every 6-8 weeks, we're going to write a more modest one every 4 weeks. This will make our jobs easier (writing less in a sitting) while serving you better (less time between issues to forget what we did in the last installment).

Today, we're going to cover some powerful topics:

  1. Creating a stand-alone graphics application from scratch..
  2. Organizing your code into objects.
  3. Using Listeners to respond to mouse events.

In each case, we'll apply the topic to our Battleship game. By the time we finish, we'll have created a "welcome screen", started to add mouse control, and drawn much of the game board.

This should be good, so let's dive right in

Great beginning game tutorial
This is something that I have been looking for. The tutorial assumes very little or no programming experience but is still quite useful for those of us who know some java. The author has kept the lesson light and humorous so as not to distance the reader with long, drawn-out technical explanations. I like the use of BlueJ for building the project. It is easy to use and not too heavy with features that a beginner won't need to use yet. So far, the parts of the tutorial have flowed together nicely and smoothly. I am having a fun time working through it and, although I already know Java, I am learning a lot along the way about graphics and game programming using Java.

PE
I started reading and working through the tutorials yesterday and I have not stopped! The tutorials assume nothing and provide almost everything that both a new Java programmer and more experienced ones need. For me it has bridged a huge gap in writing Java games which I have been looking to achieve for a while now. Is there more?

Really Nice Tutorial
I have to say that this has been one of the better tutorials that I have come across on the web. Yes it is basic but it covers the language well and introduces a nice development tool. Overall it was a nice experience
