I have a database which contains some people's first names, nicknames and surnames. I would like to get the first names of all the people in the database into some kind of a table/grid. Could anyone tell me how to do this?

you should be able to just link the database column striaght into a listbox.
If you download the Abook example from this website:-
http://www.programmersheaven.com/zone1/cat377/index.htm
I think you will find how to do what you want in here.

failing the direct link to a list box, if you create a text box that is linked to the 'data source' and 'data field' you want, then something like the follow code should fill in the list box:-
List1.Clear
If Not Adodc1.Recordset.Bof Then Adodc1.Recordset.Movefirst
For i =1 to Adodc1.Recordset.Recordcount
List.Additem text1.text
Adodc1.Recordset.Movenext
Next
