Custom UserProperties

Do programmatically added userproperties stay accessable on sent mail items? If not is their anyway I can get around this?

For example I am adding a unique reference number to an e-mail on the send event, and I want the property to be available once the mail item has been replied to..

For example,

If I send an Item - it's allocated a reference number of 1.
The end user reads the message, and replies.. I need to be able to access the assigned number.

Thanks in advance.
