How do I initialize directsound?

OK, I am programming a role playing game in C/C++ Win32, and need to know how I can play standard wave files. I thought there was some command to play your basic MIDI or wave formats, something like PlaySound(filename); but my help files with Borland C++ have nothing on it. Can somebody tell me if there is such a command, and if so how to use it? If I am mistaken, can you point me to a helpful page or something that will show me how to open a wave file and play it back in C/C++? Thanks for your time!
