windows registry - running applications

Please, where to find in windows registry if some application is running? I need to know (before I start installation process) if MS Excel is currently running or not.
Thanks.

That's not in the registry. You need to enumerate through the windows for that.

Sorry, but I don't understand "enumerate through the windows". I thought that registry somewhere stores information about currently running applications. I wanted to get some "registry key for Excel is running" and check if its value is true or false. So where to find info about running processes if not in registry? (Sorry about this stupid question(s) but I'm absolutely new to windows programming and windows architecture.)

There's no such database. What your program needs to do, is to loop through all the top-level visual components and check if it is a main window or not. Luckily there's an API function for that: EnumWindows(). More info on that function in the MSDN: http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms633497(VS.85).aspx
