reading from disk

In windows is possible to find what information is contained at a particular place on a floppy disk (ie track, side, sector). If so can this be done directly or do you have to use functions provided by the OS?

Yes. In Win2k you can open a device driver for disk or floppy (CreateFile with file name = \.A \.C and seek throught SetFilePointer) and in Win9x you can do this by Int (propably 25 , but I'm not sure).
You also can write your own disk driver (for IDE is wery easy)
