Right i'm a C# .NET programmer and have no idea about PHP. I have been told you can use NotePad, but i want somthing better that will aid me in my development. Anyway, I have decided to have a go at creating a database driven website using PHP and asp

Just wondering what software people use? How much it costs?

Can i use Visual Studio .NET? (That would be good, but i dont think you can)

PHP and ASP???!!!

Well, if you use PHP you have no need for ASP.
Looks like you're a totally beginner to PHP, so I'll point out what you must do to PHP first work on your machine:

1. Go to http://www.php.net/downloads.php and download the Windows Binary version of php (the zip file, not the installer!)
2. Unzip it in a folder of your preference (I use "C:Program FilesPHP")
3. Read the installation instructions on the install.txt file on the PHP folder to learn how to configure your local server.
4. Write a .php file and save it on your webserver document root.

About some IDE to work with PHP, there are many options, among them are the Zend Studio (http://www.zend.com/products/zend_studio), from the creator of PHP.
I preffer to use Dreamweaver to write code, since I cannot afford Zend Studio.

In my opinion you do not need an IDE to work with PHP. I instead recommend that you find a decent text editor to work with. One that I found useful for Windows was Notepad++ which can be found at: http://notepad-plus.sourceforge.net/uk/about.php

It seems to be much less cluttered than Dreamweaver or other IDEs.

• Well, I suggested an IDE because looked like the OP was asking for an IDE. :-P
If you want a text editor, i would suggest Vim (http://www.vim.org).

I use editplus ( http://www.editplus.com/ ). Great value.
- Syntax highlighting (including many PHP functions, and ASP,JS,VB...)
- Auto complete
- Many other useful functions
- Shareware

I tried installing PHP, Apache etc on my PC and had nothing but hassle - dunno why.
Instead I rent server space and upload my PHP files to test.

Once you get into PHP and MySQL I bet you'll forget ASP!

(nb I was a Visual C++ v6 programmer, so if you need any more advice from our perspective, please ask)

• I use arachonphilia as an editor - highlights code etc http://www.arachnoid.com/arachnophilia

For getting php, mysql etc to work on your development machine in a simple way use xxamp - it installs php, mysql, mercury.... easily. Then helps you make it more secure...
