Travel ideas, anyone?

Hi,

So now my degree is done I'm having a year "off" before starting out with a PhD. I'll need to work in order to have money to do stuff, but one of the main motivations for the year away from academia (besides needing a break) is to travel. So I'm pondering places I should head to.

I like nice scenery, especially mountains, and nice food. ;-) Needing to drive is not good since I can't do that, so places with no public transport are a bit of a no-go.

Anyway, anyone got any suggestions? So far I'm pondering:

- Interrailing round Norway/Sweden/Finland

- Getting an Amtrak pass and exploring lots of bits of the US (not sure which bits though...)

- Switzerland, one of my favourite places

- Slovenia, which looks beautiful

But none of that is set in stone yet. The freedom feels nice. :-)

Hope everyone is well,

Jonathan

How about Cuba? Ive always wanted to go there. Or theres Laos - Another place thats a bit risky but could be really enlightening.

Closer to home - Perhaps a tour of some of our own islands - Mull etc.

I suppose it depends what rocks your boat (an old infidelism)

Yes - seems so. Don't know where "rocked" came from.
  • How about Vanautu.

How about Africa, Zimbabwe specifically? This place is really nice. Beleive you me, the mountain landscape and vegetation would make you concentrate your thoughts and think alot about creationism and all that. Its so natural and unique. The Victoria falls is a wonderful phenomenon, not to mention the game parks and exceptionally hospitable hotels.
I suggest you think about it.

Sounds interesting. How easy is it to get around Zimbabwe on public transport?

    Thanks,

    Jonathan

    :
: You would have to use the tourist buses around (Very comfortable luxury liners) and the 4x4 vehicles used to tour the game parks.
Its quite unfortunate that this country is still racially segregated and so whites DONT use any public transport( not for fear of anything, but because they have nice cars of their own, or private taxi's), I'm not kidding at all!
There also is a very intersting place to visit, Chinhoyi caves. There are big caves with blue water in them and you just cant see the bottom. Some guys have tried to get into the water and ALWAYS had to be fished out, dead. It must be something to do with the current (or even some magnetic forces) in the water.
People are allowed to see and feel the water, but not get inside. I ussualy take my family to the place cause its really a natural wonder. The game parks are good and there is abundant wildlife to see.
Ask around and see the good offers from travel agencies (there is quite alot of them).
I can promise you, you would have a holiday of your life over here.

Infidel has a Python script. It connects to PH every day and searches through all new posts for any mention of creationism.

Uh-huh. I see you have railways too - I enjoy travelling by train and it seems pretty cheap (for someone from the UK anyway) so that would be some fun too.

So if I do go on the train, I might get some "OH MY GOSH WHITE MAN ON THE TRAIN" looks but I won't get my butt kicked, right? :-)

I think current is much more likely than magnetic forces. People aren't very magnetic...even those with a lot of iron in their diet. :-P But sounds like a really nice place to see.

You mean, travel agencies locally so I can go on trips around the game parks and so on?

: I can promise you, you would have a holiday of your life over here.
Yeah, sounds it. It's very much on my ideas list now - thanks! You mind if I contact you off PH to ask more questions some time in the future if I decide to go?

Hrm, wouldn't be too hard with the RSS feeds they provide...
