Editing Ms-dos Game

How can I edit an old ms-dos game, silent service 2 (circa 1990)?

Do I need to decompile the program first?

How can I determine in which language the program was written?

To say the truth.... Many days of intense work in Assembly language could do it, but the time you will waste to understand a dissasembler-generated code you could make the entire game again! Give up....

It depends on how much/what you want to change. If you want to update all the graphics, then, though it's definitely possible and you could do it, you probably don't want to try.

If you just want to change something minor, you might be able to without TOO MUCH trouble. Which isn't to say it still wouldn't be without MUCH trouble.

Reverse engineering is a real pain in the butt. People think reading other's assembly code is annoying and hard, try it without labels and variable names, where score might be 1F3A. The only time I can understand assembly without symbols, is when I'm the one that made it.

Of course, this also applies to any program on any OS made at any time... except maybe some really simple game that you could probably still write quicker than edit.
