I have been able to make a simple server and client for a
game, but it doesn't work if the server is on a LAN and
the client is not. How can I make the client able to
connect to the server across the internet and then
across the LAN?

Can I just put the LAN address after the IP address
in the sockaddr struct or something like that?

    No, the server must have a program to route the data between the two networks
