A quick way to set a variable to a default value if it evaluates to false is to use the ||= operator.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
$color ||= 'black';&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Will set $color to black if it is empty, undefined or contains zero. Otherwise it will retain its original value.&lt;br /&gt;
