my sound card is properly installed in rh 8.0
i configured it using sndconfig
sound is set for event
but my winamp player i.e. xmms is not running

I'm having this problem also and with me xmms isn't playing sounds. Actually I think it's more to the fact it's not opening any files.
I've installed mplayer and it runs and plays fine. But for some reason, xmms isn't working correctly.

I found out why xmms isn't working. Go to xmms.org and at the bottom of the page, read the RH8 UPdate section.
However, I wasn't able to get the mp3's to work after trying what xmms.org sugested. If anyone does get xmms to play mp3's, I would like to hear from you or give me a link where I can look up the solution.

Dear friend
There is nothing wrong with your sound card or xmms , actually the xmms in rhlinux8 do not support mp3 format, to be able to play ye'll have to download a plugin from xmms's home page or download the mplayer a player that plays mp3's as well other audio and video formats. I can email them to you if you like.

download the xmms 123 plugin from the internet

its a rpm file and can be installed by just double clicking on the explorer

and then run the xmms player then it will work
