If you have a good assembly and C knowledge get the linux kernel sorce (ver1.0 the simpliest that you can get) and check it. But it will be very very difficult if you don't have a perfect knowledge.
You can also read "The Linux Kernel Hacker Guide". It will give you very very detailed information about the kernel. Visit "www.tldp.org" for some documents about the kernel.
