What version of linux would you recommend? I want a cool desktop, but I also want it good for networking/programming/hacking. Help?

Personnally i use slackware 7.1, because i have the feeling of learning something when i want to use a new feature :}

But of course, redhat is more functionnal for newbies

Redhat was difficult for experienced user like me because of its messed up file architecture and dumb rc files and stupid GUI tools, I wonder how easy it is going to be for a newbie ?

For what you want to do I suggest you get slackware or build your own linux distibution.

To get the best of both get SuSe 7.0 Professional.

this provides a simple easy to use set of tools for the begginer
but also does not try to hide the more advanced tools for the expreianced user like mandrake and others.
