: I don't believe there are good references that encompass embedded programming because of the diversity of systems available. I am sold on PC-104 based solutions because of their similarities with standard DOS computers.

That is very good reading. It is written for Motorola HC12, but the most of it is general rules that apply to every microcontroller.
