You mean what ARE sprites?<br>
<br>
Sprites are images that have a transparent "color" (i.e. one that is not printed) and are used primarily as objects, not background. Mario is a sprite, so are the enemies. You can see Mario pass in front of the background and see the background through the spaces.<br>

That's a sprite.<br>

A game image, or any intelligent, movable image containing a transparent background color. In a<br>
game, the player, enemy and projectiles are "Sprites".
