Book on Gameprogramming + OpenGL Posted by Peaceman on 13 Dec 2001 at 1:16 PM
Hi, I have the OpenGL Superbible am quite comfortable with C++ and know a bit about the Win32 API, does anybody know a good book I could buy over christmas which shows how to set these different pieces together to a game. (I would really love the game to be something like RTS-Games, but even Ego-Shooters would be fine. If my mother doesn't notice ;))

I'm not aware of any books specifically on game development using OpenGL, but first I recommend (assuming you haven't done so already) that you start with modifying (or at least studying) existing code, whether it be something like Quake (the code for the quake engine, including the GL version, has been released at ftp.idsoftware.com), or even something as simple as a MUD. If you choose to go the MUD route, I suggest CircleMud, as it has a fairly strong foothold in both *nix and windows development environments. The point is, you need to understand how a game engine works before you can begin to piece it together with OpenGL.

Best of luck to you

If you can find it (it's old), Andre LeMothe's "The Black Art of 3D Game Programming" can get you started. It's not just about 3D work--much of the information applies to any game.

It's a bit outdated in terms of the code--i.e., no DirectX/OpenGL calls--however, the overall theories are there, as well as complete and simple 2D and 3D engines.

Cheers,
Kreitler

What is a MUD? Posted by Peaceman on 14 Dec 2001 at 11:56 AM
Excuse me, but could you say what a MUD is and maybe even where I can download it from?
Thanks

:

How about the book "Opengl game programming" ??

However I see no point in buying that book because most of it is what is in the Superbible. Superbible teaches you how to do the graphics(2d & 3d), all you have to do it add AI, characters & collision.

Just go over to http://nehe.gamedev.net instead.
