Customized Favorites Icon Posted by daybreak6876 on 28 Feb 2003 at 7:27 PM
Hi all,

I wasn't sure exactly where on this forum to place this question so I figured here is as good a place as any. :o) I was just wondering if anyone could tell me how to customize the icon associated with my website when someone adds it to their Favorites list (much like Programmers Heaven has done with this page)?

Thank you in advance for your time.

Most kindly,
Dawn

Hi!

To change the icon is pretty easy: you just have to add a link tag like this to your site:

<link rel="SHORTCUT ICON" href="/directory/nameOfFile.ico">

I haven't ever tried this but I hope it works!

for netscape 7 all you have to do is put a ico file in your wwwroot directory like this: http://www.yoursite.com/favicon.ico . note it must have the name "favicon.ico". try going to anywebsite, you should find that file.

Hey everyone,

Owen1, I appreciate your taking the time to help me. Everyone on this board seems so friendly and helpful. Thank you.

After reading Chlifs helpful response I decided to try it out but I quickly had problems so I did a search on the net for more information. Now, I cant tell you why I wasnt able to find these sites before I posted my question on this forum but for anyone who may later read this thread wanting to know how to customize their favorites icon I figured Id share my finds.

Upon the realization that I couldnt create an icon in Photoshop I quickly downloaded an icon-developing program (I choose Pixel Toolbox [http://www.axiomx.com/PixelToolbox/] since it received some good reviews and is free). After now having correctly created an icon using the appropriate software and following Chlifs advice my favorites icon still hadnt changed from the default icon. So I went back to the net where I came across two helpful pages on this subject, WebMonkey [http://hotwired.lycos.com/webmonkey/01/18/index1a.html?tw=design] and MSDN [http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/workshop/Author/dhtml/howto/ShortcutIcon.asp]. Despite all of this help my icon still saves as the default icon but my guess (which Im embarrassed to say I hadnt thought of sooner) is that the change wont take place until I actually upload the site to the net and not just test it in FrontPages preview in browser option. Because I havent yet tested my page on the web I cant say how good any of the above sites are but I figured Id share my finds just the same.

Take care everyone and thank you again Owen1.

Appreciatively,
Dawn

Hi,

I think that it only works if your site is uploaded...
