need COBOL forum

I think there should be a forum dedicated to COBOL..it's high time we realised that the COBOL language is not dead. The process of its revival is going on.

The scenario is getting more exciting with web and database capabilities being added to COBOL specification.

I strongly believe there should be a dedicated forum for COBOL in Programer's Heaven

PS : guess what? they are now speaking of COBOL and cloud computing!!
Help installing compiler for a language

Hello,

I'm a computer science student and as part of our course we are expected to be able to demonstrate some programming ability in Eiffel (Smart Eiffel). Unfortunately I have a Mac Book and this adds a dimension of complexity to compiling my programs. At the moment the editors I use are Eclipse(Java), Text Mate and XCode for C/C++ and other languages. So far writing and compiling code hasn't been a problem. I need to be able to compile my .e files.

I installed the syntax highlighter for Eiffel in Text Mate. However I need to install a compiler for Eiffel. There are a number of avenues I have explored to resolve this.

I'm reluctant to install another editor such as Eiffel Studio. As I have enough editors and I really just want a simple command compiler. I don't want to be like those people who have 30 songs and 6 media players. I will resort to this if no one can help me.

I tried http://www.maceiffel.com/, and downloaded and installed the software but nothing. . probably because my version of XCode is 3.0 and the version designated is 2.x

While I have some proficiency in some areas regarding computers I must admit if someone could give baby step instructions as to how install a smart Eiffel command line compiler for OS X 10.5 it would be much appreciated.

All I have to do in C is gcc -o name name.c, I'm hoping to reach a similar thing in eiffel i.e. se-compile name name.e

Thanks,
Sean.
CATI PROGRAMMING and Website/ Survey development software

Hi...First of all, I would like to tell you that I am absolutely new to the world of programming...I am a CATI programmer in a Market research firm and we use a software called CFMC...I would really like to know if somebody is familiar with CFMC and whether there is any alternative to it?

For those people who are not familiar with CFMC...it is a program that helps with creating surveys...and helps collect data...ALso helps with creating data tables etc

Also, our company wants to look into other options that will help with creating online surveys...and I am not sure where to start...What courses will help me learn to design surveys online?

HAs anybody hear of e-learningcenter.com? Are they good?
Enterprising Software Developers

I am looking for programmers and software developers who are employed in full time positions but who have great ideas for software they are privately developing or have developed and would like to bring to market, but cant afford to leave their job until their product starts selling.

I am specially interested in software products that work alongside other ERP solutions. For example if someone has developed a reporting solution for SAP or a remote web based data entry solution for Axapta.

The ideal candidate will be a developer or consultant who has a product ready, or almost ready to go, but is struggling to figure out how to bring the product to market whilst employed full time. This can be a tricky situation because in this position the developer would not want their employer to find out what they are up to and to release a product they would need to provide tech support and find a way to deal with the marketing, demo and sales process whist still holding down their full time job.

We are an organization that helps people who are in this position to bring products to market and we work on a percentage of sales basis, so there is nothing to loose. We do however insist on a territory exclusive contract for a set time period.

Does this interest you? Or do you know any other media where I can get in touch with the people I am seeking. If so please reply to this post and you may also email to white.ross445@gmail.com
Program Unveiled for Green Energy Summit 2009

Program Unveiled for Green Energy Summit 2009
Must Attend Event for Solar, Wind, Biomass, GreenFuels, Green IT, Green Builings, Energy Efficiency and Sustainability

December 15, 2008, Bangalore: From March 4-6, world leaders in the renewable, green, clean technology and energy efficiency sectors will gather in Bangalore for Green Energy Summit 2009. The summit is a highly efficient forum for varied stakeholders from solar, wind, biomass, IT, transport, construction, aviation, nanotechnology and biotechnology to bring together the business and science of the most important and relevant Green Energy and Clean technologies ( http://www.greenenergysummit.com ).

Green Energy Summit has two objectives, amidst a vast array of highly complex issues. First, to bring to a single, public platform - stakeholders and decision-makers from policy, finance, manufacturing and trade. Second, to help catalyze solutions, initiatives and opportunities, so that Green Business, and therefore the necessary change we seek so desperately, can prosper.

"While the business opportunities in the future are enormous, we understand the need for businesses today to gain a foothold so that economically viable change can be more logical, active and urgent. To facilitate this, we will be bringing together those who are creating, propagating and establishing the systems and standards that are needed, so there can be a firm stimulus for action that goes far beyond the rhetoric, with practicable initiatives being addressed," says Dilip Thomas Steering Committee Member/Program Chair & CEO of Saltmarch Media, the organizers of Green Energy Summit ( http://www.greenenergysummit.com/ )

"Green Energy Summit is unique in that it endeavours to identify practical steps that will be of interest to decision makers in govt, business, industry and civil society in order to move the agenda forward with speed and urgency," adds Dr. J Gururaja, Former Sr. Advisor to United Nations. Among the participants expected to explore a sustainable future at GES are the sector’s leading financiers, entrepreneurs, corporations, scientists, policy-makers, city planners and the buyers and sellers.

The first announcement of the complete program has been published from the summit website ( http://greenenergysummit.com/programOverview.html ). Featured speakers include the finest group of 'faculty' ever assembled on this subject:

-"Vision for Green Energy" -- Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, Former President of India
There is also a conclave of bankers, VCs, PE investors and aid organizations and a conclave of Chief Secretaries, Energy Secretaries and administrators to drive and debate policy and implementation.

Apart from the main conference, there will be a dedicated Exhibition area to showcase the work of vendors from Solar, Wind, Biomass, Green Fuels, Green IT, Green Buildings and Materials, Equipment manufacturers, the government, nodal agencies and the industry. Plans are also afoot to fund five practical and result-oriented projects in the areas of primary healthcare, SPV for drinking water, BIPV, “IT Lights-Off Day” and other applications; the projects will be announced at the Green Energy Awards ceremony on 6 March 2009.

Dr. Arcot Ramachandran, former UN Under Secretary General and chairperson of the summit, says, "We are also planning for the rural voice to be heard, for children to become green conscious, for achievers to be felicitated and, for participants to be taken to real-life implementations of renewable energy, so they can see and feel the promise of renewable and clean technology."

Needless to say, organisations participating in the summit have the opportunity to reinforce its commitment to sustainable development and promote its innovative green technologies and strategies with International and Indian companies, renewable energy intelligentsia, R&D and academic institutions, as well as the government, on several of the key initiatives their companies are driving.
HELP Eiffel

Hey guys, i was given a mock assignment using eiffel in one of my fundamentals classes:

Write a modular program in Eiffel that performs the following:
1)	The user inputs 15 temperatures in Fahrenheit and saves them in an array. The temperatures can be positive or negative and can be real.
2)	Converts these temperatures into their Celsius counterparts and save it in another array. The formula to do so is
Temperature in Celsius = (Temperature in Fahrenheit - 32) * 5/9
3)	Print a report with proper headings and display the two corresponding arrays in a tabular form. Please format the temperatures, with two digits after the decimal. A report may look like the following

I was wondering if anyone could bang out a rough version of this, because I'm having a large difficulty with this language altogether, seeing as how we just started 2-3 weeks ago. I understand how to do it using classes.. but apparently thats now how its required. if anyone could help me out that would be great, thanks!
HELP HELP GWBASIC LIMITAIONS

I have programmed using GW-BASIC for many year, and recently programmed a 6x6x6 Rubics' style puzzle. The program turned out great, however, it is a chore inputing each move through the keyboard (even though I have combined many). So, I need a new programming language, which is as easy to follow as GW-BASIC, which will allow instruction capture from the mouse. Any Suggestions???

Kind regards,

New real time embeded extensible scripting language
Ive written a embeded extensible scripting language compiler and VM which I intend to open source (by 1st of Jan). It is designed with real time agent systems in mind. It is fast and memory efficient and out performs all the non commercial scripting languages benchmarked on http://shootout.alioth.debian.org/ (haven’t tried the commercial ones). I am looking for people to test it before release. If you are interested please respond to this thread.

Here is a review of features:

•	Ability to script in any LALR parsable language given a grammer and rules file for the language. This implies the ability to design your own scripting language for use with the compiler and VM.
•	Link time type checking and function call resolution.
•	Ability to run script in different languages on same VM and process.
•	Function visability privileges allowing for inter-script/inter-function restricted access.
•	Seamless extendibility and integration of VM into c++ engine allowing for; c++ engine functions and object member functions to be called from scripts, scripts and functions to be called from c++, c++ engine classes to be used in scripts, c++ engine member variables to be accessable in scripts, and c++ class data variables to be exchanged between the engine and scripts with ability to integrate with engine reference counting garbage collection.
•	Scriptable classes with single inheritance, public and protected interfaces, and virtual functions.
•	Integral single dimension array data type for all soft and hard data types.
•	Pointers to objects (no pointer arithmetic).
•	Function pointers.
•	User definable integral number data type optimised for speed. Define int, double or a claxss as your integral data type so it performs faster than ordinary data types registered with the vm.
•	Variant data type.
•	Explicit casting between c++ engine types used in script.
•	Explicit data passing in function calls as well as function pointing.
•	Type registering to allow consistent exchange of data between VMs and engines.
•	Uses VM processes to run script function call threads so can have multiple processes operating on the same code and data.
•	Optional time slicing of processes to manage time allocation spent on each process.
•	Ability to perform pre-emptive multi tasking.
•	Yeilding feature to halt process update until a callback is received.
•	Optional instruction count overflow catching to stop infinite loops.
•	Thread safe VM so can distribute updating of VM processes on different threads and processors.
•	Relative addressing of all data so data can be moved or resized at runtime.

Ultimate Business Technology Conference in India

As traditional views of IT get supplanted by an overarching business technology trend, companies are investing in gaining the benefits of the next generation of computing, where resources are maximized, integrated and used to deliver business results. Saltmarch Media's Business Technology Summit ww[DOT]btsummit[DOT]com) features a convergence of intelligence on the hottest technologies on India’s business technology radar -- the ones that are not only exhibiting attributes such as cost savings, flexibility, application re-use, and faster response times, but also the ones that are charting pronounced inflection points in their evolution.

The industry's premier business technology event, held in Mumbai and Bangalore Sept. 22-26, will host sessions by Peter Coffee of Salesforce.com, Dr. Alan-Pelz Sharp of CMS Watch, Dr. Chris Harding of The Open Group, Ismael Ghalimi of Intalio, Hans De Groot of SDL Tridion, Morris Panner of OpenAir, Dr. Robert Marcus of NCOIC.org, Ravi Gururaj of VMLogix. On tap at Business Technology Summit 2008 are deep dives in SOA & Web Services, SaaS, Virtualisation and ECM, and the Expo. See the program here: http://www.btsummit.com/summitSchedule.html.

The 2008 edition of Saltmarch Media’s Business Technology (BT) Summit, centered around the theme of Riding the Workhorse IT Hockey Stick, features a convergence of four co-located tracks that have been identified as the power team for Workhorse IT -- SOA & Web Services, SaaS/PaaS, Virtualisation, Enterprise Content Management (ECM) -- offering complimentary synergistic for a robust IT infrastructure that no IT decision-maker, manager, architect, or professional can afford to ignore in their quest for business technology success.
PCASTL language

Hi,

Take a look at this language. It was designed to ease self-modifying code and it's open source. The language brings new reserved word parent and childset to edit the syntax tree of the currently written code. PCASTL: by Parent and Childset Accessible Syntax Tree Language
help with fortran program

Hi,
Please bear with me on this because I'm really not a programmer at all but I need some help with modifying a code in fortran. This program is supposed to extract data for a single month of data at a time from the file highlighted in red below which contains 108 years of data. First of all, I would like to be able to call forth that file automatically without having to type it in everytime. I tried to put in a 'write' line to do that but when it came up in the program run, it didn't have the backslashes.
Second, rather than getting one month at a time, I would like to get all the months from a given year in each output file.
Lastly, the part at the bottom highlighted in green is dealing with latitudes. I only want to get latitudes within a certain range, which I've already plugged in. however, for the values i.gt.8.5, I don't want them to be included, so what do I have to put on the right side of that part to make that happen. Thanks in advance for any help anyone can offer!

Program read_gridded_all
General Syntax for an Assembler

Hello

I would like to develop an application that would be able to convert a General Assembly Syntax to another one, so that the incompatibility problems among the assemblers finishes.

This aplication would have features like fordward and backward jumps, structures and more.

There are a lot of assemblers for the intel architecture, but avery one has it's advetages and disadvetages which makes it difficult to choose one.
Like, for example, the Netwide Assembler (NASM) has very powerful macro capabilities but it lacks of an internal way of managing structures, which is annoying when programming for Windows (you can't write a macro which would let you use the same element's names on different estructures without attaching the structure's name to every element).

I would like to know what do you think about this idea, and if already exists a program that does what i'm saying here.

I wonder if someone would have any interest in opening a Forum concerning IBM mainframe Assembler programming.

Just an idea to add something that I never found in any other of Forum.
can anyone figure this out !! Pls Help Me

(LISP)

Write functions to perform each of the followings. You are not required to write any documentation for the codes but include a report addressing all the issues mentioned below. Even though SDLC is not required but please include the screen shots for your input and output.

i. For each of the expressions below, write Lisp code that will return that
expression. Your code should use only CONS, NIL, 1, and parentheses; no
other elements of the Lisp language should be used.
a. (1)
b. ((1) 1)
c. (1 1 (1))
d. (1 1)
e. ((1 1) 1)

ii. Write a function takes a list and returns a random element of that list.
iii. Write a function that takes a list and a number and returns a list of the given number of elements. For example,

(function '(I you me) 5)

might return

(you me I I you)

iv. Write a function INFIX-CALC that takes an arithmetic expression in
infix notation and returns the result of the specified calculation. For
example:

(infix-calc '((55 + (20 * 2.1)) / 4)) ==> 24.25

You may assume that all operators take exactly two arguments, that all
atoms in the input are either operators or numbers, and that the expression
is fully parenthesized.
v. Write a program to argue with yourself. Your program should take statements that are typed in as a list and change the pronouns and negate the verbs. For instance, you should change to I, are should change to am not, and so on. Here is a possible sample session:

(argue (you are a stupid computer))
(I am not a stupid computer)
(argue (you are))
(I am not)
(argue are))
(am not)
(argue (I am a smart human))
(you are not a smart human)
(argue (your mother does wear a hat))
(my mother does not wear a hat))
(argue (you are argumentative))
(I am not argumentative)

vii.	Write a function, hanoi, that takes a single number as input and prints out the solution to the Towers of Hanoi problem for that many disks. This is the problem of moving a stack of k disks of decreasing size from bottom to top, from the first peg to the third peg with another peg that may be used as well, subject to the condition that a larger disk is never put on top of a smaller one, and only one disk may be moved at a time. (Make sure you understand the problem first). Here is a sample run:

(hanoi 3)

move disk from peg 1 to peg 3
move disk from peg 1 to peg 2
move disk from peg 3 to peg 2
move disk from peg 1 to peg 3
move disk from peg 2 to peg 1
move disk from peg 2 to peg 3
move disk from peg 1 to peg 3
NIL

Write a report based on the points given below. Try to refer to your codes/programs above to support your points/arguments for this part. No documentation is needed for the coding.

i.	Discuss the history/origin of LISP language. Highlight how the language has evolved since it was developed.
ii.	Assess LISP based on the language evaluation criteria discussed in the lecture. (This is where you can refer to the codes above to support your discussions). You may also include other code snippets, but make you understand them.
iii.	Discuss the scoping supported by LISP. Include sample codes to explain/highlight the difference between static and dynamic scoping.
iv.	Summarize the pros and cons of using LISP especially in solving the above problems. Try to highlight your points by coding one of the questions above in a different language and make comparisons.

why no message board for Fortran

I've recently being studying Fortran 90 at school and discovered there is no half decent developer sites for beginner queries and there is no half decent beginner tutorial either it is all focused on mathematical elite. So why doesn't someone take the time to write a half decent fortran tutorial and why doesn't this site have a section devoted to it?
