I am thinking of switching from Mandriva to Debian, and I wonder how hard this is going to be for me.

I have a small home network consisting of 5 computers, two of which are Windows. I keep the two Windows machines (1). To run hardware that require Windows drivers, and (2). To accomodate guests who cannot use Linux.

My thoughts are; will there be a lot of reconfiguration after I make the switch, and is it possible to convert .rpm file to .deb files for those programs that are not available under Debian?

I do allow DHCP on one port, for guests, but generally, I use a strictly static network. I also plan to switch to wireless, and I wonder if I must also reassign 192.168.0.x to 192.168.1.x?

you can convert rpm to deb using a program called alien, see http://kitenet.net/~joey/code/alien.html for details

debian doesn't come with nice user friendly configuration tools like mandrivia so if you are not comfortable with using the command line or editing configuration files you might want to consider using a debian based distro such as ubuntu or mepis
