Beginner Game Programmer - vb.net or C++.net Posted by jeffman on 19 Sept 2007 at 8:34 AM
hello does any one know some good books for game programming in vb.net and c++.net because i want to learn how to make good games in both and can someone direct me to websites or places where i can get a development kit (excluding microsofts hobbyist xbox game compiler which makes you pay to share) for the xbox, or xbox 360 , or xbox 360 elite (it would be nice if the kit was free but if you have to pay $500 or less and get one that has samples that would be fine too but i want to pay for something that allows you to distribute it too onto DVDs and it tells me how i can get my game signed or the program signs it itself). in simple i what to find a development kit for the xbox that i can get not matter if i pay some money for it but not pay an outrageous amount and be able to still distribute games after its signed by microsoft and i also what to know how to game program in c++.net and vb.net for windows, the xbox or xbox 360, and programming in c++.net or c++ for the ps2 and ps3 or learn how to program for the ps2 and ps3.

Developing for almost any console can get very expensive. Because you state that you are a beginner in game development, I recommend starting off on PC at first, as development on PC tends to be more readily available.

Most consoles use C++ with a modified version of the standard libraries. If you already know C++, I recommend using that.

There are no special "game development kits"--Besides software like GameMaker, which are quite limited in what they can do (Although provide a way to practice game design and basic game theory)

For a website, I personally recommend GameDev.net, a great game development site featuring members from both hobby/indie, to even professional game developers. I myself is a member.

Good luck
