Ability to return to previous level link Posted by Extrasolar on 16 Feb 2004 at 4:04 PM
This message was edited by Extrasolar at 2004-2-16 16:9:24

If I've been on a particular forum leaving a few reply's / posts in say, "C / C++ Programming" in the C / C++ section, and I want to return to the C / C++ forum list I have to either click the back button a hundred times or click on the "Messageboard Home" link and navigate back to the C / C++ section. Would it not be better to add each sections link in the "Current area" links? It would make for much easier navigation.

so "HOME -> Messageboard Home -> C / C++ Programming"
would become "HOME -> Messageboard Home -> C / C++ -> C / C++ Programming"...etc

Thanks

Certainly gets my vote, I've thought about the same thing but never got round to commenting on it.

Good point!

I will try to get that into the system.

The only issue I have with it is that the line:

Current area: HOME -> Messageboard Home -> Comments on this site -> Post a reply

Can become quite long and perhaps line wrap into two lines, perhaps need a way to make it shorter..... Or always make it on two lines?

The "Post Reply", "Preview Message"..etc parts could be removed. I mean I know I'm posting a reply so I don't need that line to tell me so. There is a header saying so.

The line would then read:

Current area: HOME -> Messageboard Home -> Programmers Heaven -> Comments on this site. As the example I showed in my previous post. etc..

I can't see that it will get too long seeing as you'd be removing the "Post Reply" and adding in an extra link or two.

Something to ponder. :)

edit: You could place it on two lines or you could perhaps move the 'HOME' link to another location such as the nav bar at the left.

Here is another suggestion:
You could also add a few more back buttons. One that goes up 5 posts and one that goes 10 posts. This way users can go up much quicker and the header won't get cluttered too much.
