1.) visual basic is used to create stand alone app's or user controls and whatnot, Structured Query Language(SQL) is used to perform querys against database's, as far as I know all database's can use some form of sql, some have more specific versions such as Transact SQL for SQL server which cantain the same base syntax with a few added functions and what not.

2.)using vb with sql allows you to make database applications, such as your own version of a query analyzer, a sales program the uses a database backend, and any program that you have large amounts of data to store and you want it to be organized and easy to access.

3)I belive I answered this one #1 as well, however as far as benifiets go, for vb you would need to know about othere programming languages to see the advantages, one signifigant advantage over many other languages is, it is very easy to learn the basics as like the name says it is visual to the point where you can construct your programs by basicly draging and droping controls onto the form and then doing the code for the events. as for SQL the main advantage is once learned it is very easy to apply it to most database's, with a very minor learning curve between database type.
