You can also use utilities like "grep" (which is a UNIX program that has been ported to Winblows by various people, I recommend http://www.cygwin.com) to search for patterns in text files.
The "square" is probably a UNIX style newline character which worthless programs such as Notepad are incapable of recognizing. If my guess is right, each record is really just one line, terminated...
Are the Unix and Windows computers networked on the same network? Or are you trying to move the file(s) using floppies?
