How to Fix '0xc0000218' Stop Error in Microsoft Windows?

Windows Registry is one of the most important part of Microsoft Windows operating system. It is a database, which stores all the configuration options and settings of Windows. Registry also contains settings for the low-level OS components and applications, that run on Windows platform, such as services, device drivers, kernel, user interface, SAM, and third-party software. In case this hierarchical database gets damaged, your system may not boot and you may not be able to access Windows partitions on the drive. This behavior of Windows operating system leads to critical partition loss. In order to recover lost partitions in such cases, you need to opt for Windows Partition Recovery.

Consider, one fine day, when you start your Windows-based computer, and come across following Stop error message: Stop 0xc0000218 (0xe11a30e8, 0x00000000, 0x000000000,0x00000000) UNKNOWN_HARD_ERROR Or Stop: 0xc0000218 {Registry File Failure} The registry cannot load the hive (file): \SystemRoot\System32\Config\SYSTEM or its log or alternate. It is corrupt, absent, or not writable. After the above error, system boot process fails. In order to sort out this problem, you need to find out the actual cause of this problem and perform Partition Recovery by sorting it out.

Grounds of the issue The above behavior occurs if the necessary registry hives can not be loaded into memory. You may face this problem if the file is either missing or corrupt. Registry files may get damaged due to virus infection, hard drive corruption, file system errors, improper system shutdown, and other such reasons.

How to Fix Registry Corruption? Run 'chkdsk /p' command on your hard drive using the Recovery Console. After completion of disk checking, reboot the system. When the operating system loads, press Space Bar key when 'Load Last Known Good' message is displayed. Perform parallel installation, and restore damaged registry files from backup.

If the above methods can not help you to solve the problem, you need to format your hard drive and reinstall Windows operating system. But, hard drive formatting removes all the partitions and stored data. In such cases, Partition Recovery Software becomes need of the hour.

Why do anything?
chkdsk /p

Performs an exhaustive check even if the drive is not marked for chkdsk to run. This parameter does not make any changes to the drive.

I've also never recommended a "parallel installation," which I can only assume you mean to be installing a different copy of the OS on the same partition. In fact, it's usually not a good idea. Also, the "Last Known Good Configuration" won't help fix a corrupt registry.

From what I can see, this article simply goes the long and time consuming route for you to reinstall Windows. Follow this article instead: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307545.
