Partitions Inaccessible Post System Update

Windows system updates allow the users to make their system compatible with all the new applications, secure from viruses, and offers many other things. These updates are installed in your system automatically through 'Automatic Update' feature. Once these updates are installed on your system, your computer needs a restart. While these critical updates prove successful in most cases, they can also result in corruption of critical system file(s). In such cases, the operating system becomes unbootable and the data saved in the hard drive becomes inaccessible. For such situations, the user needs to overwrite the corrupted file by a new and valid copy of that file. However, if the user is unable to perform the above task, then s/he is not left with any option, but to perform a reinstall of Windows operating system. While this resolution works in every case, it also results in loss of data from all the partitions. To recover all the formatted partitions and data within them, in case of no data backup availability, the user needs to opt for a commercial Partition Recovery Software.

The above scenario can be explained with the help of the below error message: “OS Loader v4.01 Disk I/O Error: Status 00000001 Windows NT could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: Ntoskrnl.exe Please reinstall a copy of the above file.” This error message appears when you boot your Windows XP system after installing some critical updates. The message does not allow the system to complete the boot process, which further renders to inaccessibility of hard drive partitions and data stored within them.

Cause:

As specified in the error message, the 'Ntoskrnl.exe' file is corrupted. The file is required at the time of Windows XP startup.

Resolution:

To get past the above boot error message and to access the hard drive partitions and data within them, reinstall the copy of the file using below steps:

1.Insert Microsoft Windows XP CD and press any key. 2.Press 'R' to select the 'Recovery Console'. 3.Choose Windows XP and enter the administrative password. 4.Type 'expand d:\i386\ntoskrnl.ex_ c:\windows\system32' command 5.Enter 'Y' to overwrite the file. 6.Type exit and try to reboot your system.

In case the above steps fail to resolve your issue and your data remains inaccessible, then you will need to reinstall the operating system and restore data from the backup. However, in case of no backup, you will need to opt for a powerful Partition Recovery Software. Such Partition Recovery tools use effective, yet safe recovery tools to recover formatted hard drive partitions and data within them.

Stellar Phoenix Windows Data Recovery is one such Partition Recovery tool that recovers all lost partitions based upon NTFS, NTFS5, FAT12, FAT16, FAT32, and VFAT file systems. It can be installed on Windows 7, Vista, 2003, XP, and 2000.
