Cachemov Fails on a Windows 2000 System

Client Side Caching or CSC is a feature included in Windows Server operating systems that allows storing frequently used information on a client computer. Using this functionality increases client computer's performance as it can now quickly access the file, which otherwise would have been accessed from server. Cachemov.exe is a utility of Windows 2000 Resource Kit that you can use to move the CSC data to a different location. But sometimes, you might fail to use this utility while attempting to move CSC data to a drive. This occurs if it is formatted to NTFS file system. The solution to such problems involve a step that requires you to reformat the volume that causes data loss. In such cases if data backup proves to be invalid to restore the lost data, you will need to use a third-party data recovery software.

To illustrate this, consider that you use localised version of Windows 2000 operating system. You try to use Cachemov.exe tool in order to move cache data to a NTFS formatted drive. But the process fails at 'Check the Destination' stage and you come across the below error message:

“Failed to reset security on cache. Move cannot continue.”

You cannot move the cache data at even subsequent attempts of doing so.

Cause

This issue occurs because the cache move operation requires ACL (Access Control List) to be built for the new folder. To perform this task, Cachemov.exe tool doesn't use popular Security ID (SID), but uses Administrators group name. Hence, when you try to use the tool on localized version of Windows 2000 operating system, the tool fails as it cannot find the group name on this system.

Solution

To successfully use Cachmov.exe tool to move the cache data on localized Windows 2000 system, you need to follow these steps:

Change Administrators group name to 'Administrators' You then need to create an 'Administrators' group that you can use to populate with desired members and add to Access Control List of the folder using Full Control rights Next, reformat the target volume using FAT16 or FAT32 file system and set the folder's security feature to default for local CSC folder Create the following registry key:

HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\NetCache Value: DatabaseLocation Type: REG_SZ Data: Path to CSC working directory

Restore lost data from backup

If backup is invalid to offer complete data restoration results, use a powerful data recovery utility. Data Recovery Software recover all the lost data while logical crashes and also serve as efficient undelete products.

Stellar Phoenix Windows Data Recovery is a reliable and advanced data recovery tool to recover lost data. It supports Windows 7 RC1, Vista, XP, 2003 and 2000 operating systems.
