Description

VBS.Pub is a file-infecting worm type that can infect all the files with .hta, .asp, .htm, .html, .htt, .vbs, or .vbe file extension. The worm infects Windows operating systems including but not limited to Windows Server 2003 and Windows 2000. Being a mass-mailing worm, the worm is received in an e-mail with an empty e-mail body the Subject 'Re'. This e-mail contains an attachment with .hta, .asp, .htm, .html, .htt .vbs, or .vbe file extension. Once the system is infected by this virus, it uses Microsoft Outlook to send its copy to all the users that are present in Microsoft Outlook Address Book. This is an encrypted virus that can append to all the files that have file extensions, mentioned above, and are found on the fixed and network drives of the computer.

When the infected file is executed, the virus is copied by itself to %WINDOWS% folder bearing Pubrn.vbs file name. In some cases, the file name can be different as well, for example PuBrN.vBs.

You can detect the presence of this virus by a file Pubrn.vbs in %WINDOWS% folder. Also, the file size of files with above mentioned file extensions may be found to be unexpectedly high.

Effects

The infected computer loses all its files and folders on 6th, 13th, 21st, and 28th of each month. The virus searches all directories of the computer on these dates and deletes all the files that are stored on the fixed and network drives.
