Changing Active Partition Using Disk Management Makes Windows Unbootable

Every computer system has a boot or system partition, which contains the operating system. This partition is used by your system to boot up and load the operating system in main memory. However, when you make any primary hard drive partition active in Microsoft Windows operating system-based computer, the system may not boot up and you may face boot errors on Blue Screen. This behavior does not let you access your system or the files stored in the hard drive. It leads to significant file loss and requires File Recovery Software to be sorted out.

In a practical scenario, your Windows based computer may not boot up after you mark a primary Windows partition as active using the Disk Management snap-in utility. Additionally, you may come across the below error message at startup:

“NTLDR is missing. Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart.”

After the above error message, your system becomes totally unusable and inaccessible. In order to access your valuable files on Windows hard drive, you must identify the cause of this behavior and perform File Recovery by resolving it.

Root of the problem

You face this problem if a partition, which is marked as active, doesn't contain boot files of Windows or another operating system. For Intel-based systems, the boot partition has to be the primary partition, which is marked as active, to boot your system. You must have boot partition on a hard drive that your system accesses at startup. You can have only one active boot partition at a time.

The same problem can also occur if some critical boot files, like Ntdetect.com, Hal.dll, and Ntldr are either missing or damaged. Corruption may occur due to virus infection, improper system shutdown, and operating system malfunction.

Solution

To fix this problem, follow any of the below methods:

  • Change active partition by booting your system using floppy disk.
  • Boot your system using Windows boot disk.
  • Format your Windows hard drive and reinstall operating system.
Although, hard drive formatting helps you to remove all of the system errors, it also deletes all the files from your hard drive, causing severe file loss. In such situations, File Recovery becomes need of hour.

You can easily and effectively recover lost files from Windows hard drive using powerful File Recovery Software. The applications are designed to thoroughly scan the entire hard drive and extract all lost files from it.

Windows Data Recovery Software recovers lost, missing, deleted, and inaccessible files from Windows hard drive, USB drive, and other Windows supported storage media. The software supports recovery from NTFS5, NTFS, FAT32, VFAT, FAT16, and FAT12 file system partitions of Windows 7, Vista, 2003, XP, and 2000.
