Recovering data in case of Unmountable Boot Volume error in Windows XP

As an extensive user, I usually take lots of precautions to safeguard my system against various safety threats. Because, as you may know, no matter how much measures you take there is some or the other reasons that can make you lose the data. Such reasons could be virus infections, power surges, human errors, abrupt system shutdown, corrupt file system, etc. In such cases, you should consider taking appropriate steps to rectify the issue. However, if you are unable to do so then you should use a third-party data recovery tools to recover the trapped data.

Consider a scenario wherein you are unable to start your Windows XP system. An error message is getting displayed, that is:

“Unmountable Boot Volume”

Cause:

There can be following causes for the aforementioned error message: The system drive is corrupted and, thus, is unable to be mounted. You are using a standard 40-wire cable instead of the 80-wire, 40-pin cable to connect the UDMA (Ultra DMA) drive to the controller. The BIOS settings are defined to impose the faster UDMA modes.

Resolution:

To resolve the aforementioned error message, you should perform the following methods, not in any specific order: If the system drive is corrupted, you should perform the following steps: Insert the Windows XP CD-ROM in the disk drive, and restart the system. Press R to start the Recovery Console when the 'Welcome to Setup' screen is displayed. Select the drive for which recovery is to be done. Enter the administrator password, when prompted to do so. Enter chkdsk /r, and press Enter. Enter exit, and press Enter. If the error is because of the connector cable, then you should replace the 40-wire with an 80-wire UDMA cable. If the error has occurred because of incorrect BIOS preferences, then you should load the 'Fail-Safe' settings. Then, reactivate the most frequently used options.

These aforementioned methods should be able to resolve the issue. However, if you are not able to address the situation then you should use a third-party data recovery software to recover the trapped data. Such data recovery tools are able to safely recover all the data without overwriting the hard disk using sophisticated scanning algorithms.

Windows Data Recovery is a data recovery software that enables you to recover lost, deleted, or formatted data from both FAT and NTFS file systems. This file data recovery tool is able to recover more than 200 file types from various storage media such as hard drives, external hard disks, iPods, pen drives, etc. This tool is capable to recovering lost emails from Outlook Express and MS Outlook. It is compatible with Windows 7, Vista, Server 2003, XP, and Server 2000.
