How to Resolve “Error 0x80040116” in MS Outlook 2003?

If you use MS Outlook as the email application, then you must be knowing the its data is stored mainly in the form of PST (Personal Storage Table) files. This file stores all kinds of Outlook information within itself and can be transferred to other systems by using some storage media such as pen drive, etc. Having said that, when you transfer the PST file it may get corrupt because of improper data transfer. In such cases, you can use various methods to fix the PST file. If it is not possible to get Outlook recovery, then there is a possibility that the PST file can be recovered using a third-party repair pst software.

Consider a situation in which you are using MS Outlook 2003. After downloading few emails, when you try to read an email, the following error message is displayed:

“File path\filename.pst could not be accessed. Data error. Cyclic redundancy check.”

In addition, when you click the 'Deleted Items' folder, you are unable to do so. The following error message is displayed:

“Error 0x80040116”

Cause:

The reason for this problem is that the PST file has corrupted. Improper data transfer seems to be the most possible reason behind this.

Resolution:

To resolve this situation and use Outlook in the desired manner, you can perform the following methods: Run Chkdsk to scan for disk-related errors: You should run chkdsk by performing the following steps: Click Start | Run. Type 'CMD' in the 'Open' box and press the 'Enter' key. The Command Prompt window is displayed. Type 'chkdsk /f' in the command prompt and press the 'Enter' key. Exit Command Prompt window when chkdsk gets completed. Open Outlook and check if the error is persisting. If yes, then perform the next method. Repair the PST file: You should repair the PST file using the Inbox Repair (Scanpst.exe) tool. This could be done by performing the following steps: Click Start | Search. The Search window will be displayed. Search for 'Scanpst.exe' in the computer. From the search results, double-click the Scanpst.exe file. Click Browse and locate the damaged PST file. In the 'Inbox Repair Tool' dialog box, click 'Start' to repair the PST file. Once the scanning gets completed, try to start Outlook and check if the problem is resolved.

If the problem persists, then you should use a third-party pst file recovery software to perform Outlook recovery. The advantage of using these tools is that the email recovery is safe, reliable, and fast.
