Disk Utility and FSCK Fail To Boot Mac OS X

Is your Mac OS X based system unable to boot normally? Are you encountering a blank gray screen while booting your Mac OS X? Or do you view a broken folder icon/flashing question mark while booting your Mac OS X system? If your Mac OS X based system exhibits any of the above problems, then in most cases the file system (HFS, HFS+, HFSX, and HFS Wrapper) is corrupt or damaged. The unbootability of your Mac OS X system does not allow you to access the data saved in the hard drive. To recover data after file system damage, you need to opt for a comprehensive data backup. However, in case of no backup availability, you have the option to repair file system using two repair utilities – Disk Utility and FSCK. But if these utilities fail to repair the file system and the system remains unbootable, then you need to use a third-party Mac Data Recovery utility.

To explain the above case, consider a realistic scenario wherein you encounter the below error message during booting of Mac OS X:

“file system dirty, run fsck.”

After the above error message appears, your Mac OS X machine becomes unbootable and the hard drive data becomes inaccessible.

Cause:

The above error message appears when the file system of your Mac OS X gets corrupted or damaged. File system corruption is attributed to unexpected system shutdown, power failure, and forced restart.

Resolution:

To resolve the above error message and to access hard drive files post file system damage:

Boot your Mac OS X system in safe mode. Try an inbuilt repair utility 'Disk Utility' to repair your file system. Try to repair the disk using a command-line utility 'FSCK'. If above options fail to overcome the above error message, restore data from an updated backup. However, in case of absence of an updated backup, you need to opt for an effective third-party Mac disk Recovery software. Such Mac File Recovery tools ensure complete recovery of all hard drive data using advanced scanning algorithms.

Stellar Phoenix Macintosh Data Recovery is a powerful, secure, and user-friendly application that recoups lost data from Mac hard drives. Compatible with Mac OS X 10.3.9 and above operating systems, the Mac File Recovery software supports recovery from almost all file systems like HFS, HFS+, HFSX, HFS Wrapper, and FAT file systems.
