How to modify the boot.ini file to start inaccessible Windows XP

In the Windows systems, the boot.ini file is one of the first files that is accessed when the system starts up. The purpose of this file is to notify the system about which operating system is to be boot. So, this is obvious if this file gets damaged then the system gets stuck during the booting operation and the system remains inaccessible. In such cases, you should try to modify the boot.ini file so that you could access the system and save the data. If that is not possible, then there is a serious need to use a third-party data recovery software to perform data recovery.

Taking a practical scenario in which you are unable to start your Windows XP system. In this case, you face either or both of the following error messages: "Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:

Windows\System32\Hal.dll"

OR

"Invalid Boot.ini"
Cause: This problem may appear if there is some problem with the boot.ini file. The boot.ini file may be missing, damaged, or contains incorrect entries due to which the system is not booting.

Resolution: To resolve this boot.ini file related error, you should perform the following steps using the Windows XP setup CD:

-Adjust the booting preferences in the BIOS section to start the system using a Boot CD. -Start the system using the Windows XP setup CD. -Press the 'Spacebar' or any other key, when the 'Press any key to boot from CD' message is displayed. -Press the 'R' key, when the 'Welcome to Setup' message is displayed, to start the Recovery Console. -Type 'bootcfg /list' in the command prompt and press the 'Enter' key to see the entries in the Boot.ini file. -Type 'bootcfg /rebuild' and press the 'Enter' key to scan the system to get the list of installations and them to the boot.ini file. -Enter 'Y' when the following message is displayed: Total Identified Windows Installs: 1

[1] C:\Windows Add installation to boot list? (Yes/No/All) -Enter the name of your operating system when you get the following message: Enter Load Identifier -Type '/fastdetect' and press the 'Enter' key when the following message is displayed: Enter OS Load options -Type 'exit' to exit the Recovery Console. -Restart the system. If you are still unable to access the system, then you need to use a third-party data recovery software to recover the inaccessible data. Such data recovery tools work without causing any damage to the existing files or folders.
