Embedded Java
Java's strong appeal for embedded applications is sometimes offset by concerns about its speed and its memory requirements. However, there are techniques that you can use to boost Java performance and reduce memory needs, and of course the Java virtual machine you choose affects Java performance, too. You can make better-informed decisions about using Java by understanding the factors that affect its performance and selecting meaningful benchmarks for embedded applications.

J2ME devices: Real-world performance
Characterizing device performance helps developers write applications that provide good user experiences. Understanding performance aids developers in understanding each device's limitations and strengths, and in tailoring applications to suit their intent. Application performance is critical in low-level computing devices. This article illustrates how the Java Wireless Competency Centre designs tests to characterize the performance of real-world J2ME (Java 2 Platform, Micro Edition) devices. The center organizes the devices into different classes depending on their performance in the tests. The benchmark applications test VM performance, thread-switching, graphics, RMS (record management system), network communication, and XML parsing.
