Calculating the squareroot using only plus & minus?

How do I calculate tha value of x, using only plus, minus, and an "unlimited" number of store-locations!

    Well, given that multiplication can be thought of as a series of additions, and division can be thought of as a series of subtractions, it is possible to calculate the square root with just addition and subtraction.

    Why don't you forget that a computer is involved, and try to work this out on paper. Pick a number, and try to work out the square root. Once you have a method that seems to work, try a few numbers to see if the process seems to work consistently.

    Once you have this worked out, then you can begin to work on converting the "paper" method to a "computer" method.
